About Stephen

I started diving over 30 years ago when I took a basic NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) scuba diver course. I dived just for fun for many years and then in the early 2000’s, at the urging of a friend, I enrolled in the grueling three month Los Angeles County Underwater Instructor’s Certification Course. It is arguably the best training that a scuba instructor can find. The program really gives instructors not just the information they need to be able to teach but actually how to be an effective scuba instructor. There are classroom sessions that cover the physics and oceanography and marine biology and so on but then there are critiqued practice teaching sessions.

I then went on to become certified as a scuba instructor with most of the other major certification agencies, PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) NAUI, YMCA (which sadly ended its scuba programs at the end of 2008 after 50 years) CMAS (a European Agency whose French acronym translates loosely as World Underwater Federation) and finally the Handicapped Scuba Association of America. Last year I became an Instructor Trainer with NAUI and L.A. County as well as a PADI MSDT (Master Scuba Diver Trainer)

I am also a First Aid, CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) instructor with NAUI and ASHI (American Safety and Health Institute)
